An hour later, I was sitting in my car, staring out the window. The doctor had led me to the morgue and allowed me to see her before I left. I had stared down at her, remembering her this morning with bright-brown eyes and a pale face. She was even paler now. What if I had stayed with her? Would that have made a difference? I didn’t think so.

I started the car and wondered what I should do now. Should I return to the bakery and tell them? Should I go back to her place? What was going to happen to her business and her home? She had no family; her parents had died when she was in college. She had only been married for a couple of years before he left her for someone else. I wasn’t aware of any other family I would need to contact, although she had several close friends to whom I would have to reach out.

I couldn’t imagine doing that now. I felt numb and lost and unsure of what the future would hold. I started toward the bakery, but when I got there, I sat in the car and stared at the back door. I wasn’t ready to go in there and face the questions, the sorrow. I knew how much her employees loved her, and I wasn’t prepared to crash their world yet. This news could wait another day.

I backed out of the space and turned toward the house. When I arrived there, I couldn’t make myself get out of the car. How could I stay in her home without her there?

I must have sat there for ten minutes before I started the car again and drove away. I drove for twenty minutes before I realized where I was going, and a few minutes later, I turned onto the lane for Honeyhill Farms.

I needed a friendly face, someone who would understand grief and pain. I glanced around as I drove up the drive and took the left lane to the private residence, not the right that led to the barn.

There were no cars near the house, so I turned around and went back down the drive and toward the barn. I parked with seven other cars and climbed out, looking around but not seeing Aaron’s truck.

A man stood near the barn, sweeping a pathway, and I approached him. “Excuse me, do you know where Aaron is?”

He lifted his head and smiled. “He’s not here right now.” He glanced at his watch. “He probably won’t be back today.”

“Do you know when he will be home?” I asked and then added, “I’m an old friend.”

“He usually doesn’t get back until around five.”

I nodded. I knew that it was almost four. “Do you mind if I wait for him?”

“No, be my guest. The store is open for a little longer if you want to visit there.”

“Thanks,” I told him and made my way to the small store that sold bundled fruits and veggies grown on the farm.
